I do love Olly for having introduced me to Belle & Sebastian. I may not love a lot of their stuff, but what I do love is almost transcendent. I say as I annoy the woman next to me by wiggling my butt in time with the music. She gives me a dirty look, but I just shrug.
I tweeted last night about the familiarity that the internet and specifically social networking sites breed. It was prompted by my commenting on an old college pal's wife's Facebook about someone's taint. I thought briefly, this is wildly inappropriate. I don't even know this woman! But then I realized, I would have made the same joke in person, so it's pretty much who I am.
The concern was not really for the person but for how their friends and their friends of friends actually would perceive it. I would hate to put someone in the position of having to defend my insanity. That's hardly fair to them. But on the other hand, I defend my friends all the time. But no one really seems to be assholes so I don't have to do it nearly as often as one would expect. Who are these respectable people and why on earth are they friends with me, right?
The issue was resolved for me when I posted a version of this on Facebook and the woman in question pointed out that we had indeed met in college but that I was clearly too drunk to remember it!
