Small town, bright lights, Saturday night
I am lamenting the fact that I forgot my headphones this morning. This means I will have to listen to the anoying lady at the front of the train for the next 50 minutes. If you hear about a homicide on the Hudson Line later today, you don't have to wonder about it.
I saw a picture of a friend last night. He was not wearing a shirt. Suffice it to say I finished the Glenlivet in hopes of erasing it from my memory. As you can see, I failed. I am left with the stark reality that I do not want to inflict such pain on others. So, I need to start walking. In the morning. I mean I have a treadmill, so WTF, right? Once you start it gets addictive, right? Yeah. Anyway, I need to get my ass moving on a regular basis.
Tyson's freakin' four year-old daughter on life support after being found caught by her neck on a treadmill cable. How does that happen? And I realy hope I don't regret this later, but, poor Mike.
Shockingly obvious headline #761,032: "Refusing whooping cough vaccine shown to raise risk"
Tomorrow, a follow up on the expose that piercing your eyeballs with knitting needles may increas the risk of blindness.
I understand that people believe that vaccines are evil plots perpetrated by the government and the pharmacological industry, but don't be shocked if your kid ends up contracting the disease for which you refused to have them vaccinated!! Are people really this fucking stupid? Have we as a society moved to the place where there really is absolutely no understanding of consequences? I anxiously await the stories of parents suing over their kids getting sick after they refused to exercise the means by which they might protect them. Maybe we need a law.
Some kids tried to blow up a Starbucks with M-80s on the UES. That narrows it down to only 538 locations. Blue-haired Manhattanites are clutching their pearls and demanding that this be investigated as a hate crime against people who drink over-priced coffee products. The mayor is said to be deeply concerned.
There will be blood in the streets of California today if their Supreme Court declares that the people of the state can amend the constitution with a majority opinion. If on the other hand, the court rules that they can overrule the people, there will be loud stories about "activist judges," pearl cluching over a supposed violent reaction from the extreme right, the celebration in the press of militias, the making of new celebrities who talk about black helicopters and a governtment gone power-mad (as opposed to rational people ike myslf who predict martial law and a suspension of al civil rights by President-For-Life and Messiah, Saint Bam Bam) and Barry O's pick for the Supreme Court - also to be anounced today - will get burned in the backlash. Any bets on whether he's sending out a sacrificial lamb in light of the ruling today? Or did the White House just get blindsided by the timing of a news story - again? Either way, it provides the backdrop for his choice.

Zed's dead, baby. Zed's dead.
Still kinda freaked out by the American Experience piece on Three Mile Island I downloaded and watched. I'm not sure what disturbed me more: the fact that the entire thing would never have happened had the guys running things simply not done absolutely the wrong thing by countermanding the facility's automatic procedures or the way the press in their fear for their own lives admittedly turned into a raving pack of hyenas (please note I gave them the benefit of the doubt and said "turned into"...I'm feeling generous). I wonder if there was ever a real investigation of the fact that they did the one thing that they should not have done. Cue the Michael Moore music. That single event pretty much shot down nuclear power in the United States. Sure Chernobyl hlped later, but just uttering the words Three Mile Island in the early 80's was guaranteed to send a chill down people's necks. Add to that the whole "NO NUKES" movement and it's no wonder the cleanest and cheapest source of energy available to us was shelved.
I know I am tempting fate by even thinking about this, much less writing about it, given my proximity to Indian Point, but the thing that was lost in the whole thing was that the plant funtioned correctly and would have saved itself had men not intervened. The technology worked. But because the people fucked up, we blamed everyone nd shelved the technology. How many nuclear accidents has the Navy had? The operate a feet of nuclear powered vessels that prowl the earth up to 1,000 feet below the surface of the ocean. How many reactor incidents have they had? Even the Soviets who were admittedly a tad less safety conscious. What was their total record over how many years?
No fossil fuels used. No greenhouse gasses produced. Completely home-grown. If it were anything else, there would be a plethura of conspiracy theories abounding about how it had been scuttled by the oil industry or the coal industry or the wind industry or the sun people. But now we just don't talk about it.

Bang bang out on the floor
Whines #7481-7484
It's actually surprisingly difficult to find a reasonably non-sucky restaurant within 4 blocks of the New York Palace Hotel with a private room to accommodate 35-45 people on a Wednesday night in June for less than $130 per person including tax, tip and liquor.
Don't you hate it someone comes into a situation and turns everything on its head? I mean I can understand changing procedures and rules, but to throw things into a grab-bag where every single decision becomes a committee meeting with the outcome changing depending on the whim of those in charge? It saps the morale of a company. It breeds uncertainty and anxiety in the workforce. It slows down decision-making. It is a recipe for eventual disaster.
How do you explain to the Board that you want them to pay 125% of market value for something? Sure it was negotiated in December and has since been subject to three reductions in price. Plus you're on the hook at this point for 75% of the total cost if you back out now. Maybe if the contract had been negotiated in January or February you might have gotten a better deal.
We're being ruled by a thug-o-cracy so brazenly un-American that would disgust almost all of my friends to the point of armed insurrection if it were even contemplated by a Republican. Fourth estate indeed.
Did you know that Tylenol 3 with codeine is generically called APAP w/ Codeine? It leaves one all atwitter.

If you feel discouraged
The water's like glass this morning.
Blue sky painted on just so. High cirrus.
Is that what they are called?
I used to know.
I used to know a lot.
Did the Hudson carve this pass or was it
assisted by high explosives?
The cliffs on the far side
carry blast scars.
Men did it.
Men in yellow helmets.
Or maybe silver.
Looking like urban safari guides.
Helping the river
one explosion at a time.
I want to swim.
To feel myself once again
sliding through the wet.
One stroke at a time.
Gliding like a golden pike.
The train passengers cheer
as I pass the scullers.

Stand up all victims of oppression
It's hilarious watching the news today. Stories that a year ago or even six months ago would have been blasted across the front pages in 72 point bold are buried on page A17. Stories about the economy are suddenly hopeful despite abyssmal numbers and no real sign of recovery. Stories about the war are non-existent. Civilians killed in Afghanistan? It's the cost of war, not a big deal. Did you hear about Michelle Obama's arms? The commander of U.S. forces fired for making the administration look bad? Nothing to see here, let's talk about Wanda Sykes or Rush or anything else. Unemployment a full point higher than anticipated by the eggheads in the White House? Actually higher than projected worst case scenarios without the stimulus? Shhhhhhh, did you hear that Miss California was on Dobson's Fascist Follies? Barry is cutting money for enlistment boinuses and recruitment in the military while he expands operations in Afghanistan. He's plannin to wrap things up in a year or so and then let the military have bake sales to buy bombers!
Barry sends ACORN to picket corporate leaders in anticipation of his meeting with them and then tells them, "I'm the only tingh between you an the pitchforks." Steve Rattner tells lenders that if they don't go along with teh Administration that he will use the White House Press Corps to bury you!! Wanda Sykes delivers a piece written by Axelrod to revive the Rush-mania and the media obediantly drops to their knees and opens wide.
The sickest to me is the Afghanistan debacle. Wanna know what realy happened? This administration is really Stalinist by nature so they pulled a classic Soviet move only with the Carter naive twist: they slaughtered a hundred civilians so they could fire the guy in charge and look like they care - see we will look after you - while still showing how bloodthristy they can be. See there's always a little doubt in the back of the Afghans minds. It's just disgusting and it will all come out or the bodies will start piling up. Just watch.

Young hearts beat free tonight
I realized recently that in this life you are not going to get along with everyone. You're shaking your head and muttering "recently?" Not everyone is going to laugh at your jokes. People are sometimes just wired differently and shared experiences deep on one's past is often a poor reason to try to maintain an acquaintanceship. Plus, I am a bit of a perverted fuck. Just a bit. Hell, my sister sugested that if I were not me, and were to meet me at an event or functon that I would hate me.
But the fact that I have a wealth of support from friends for who I am that I am not feeling the need to change that. Despite the hope from some of you. Kinda like the GOP.
The GOP is a diferent cat though. The media and many on the Left are calling for the GOP to become the Democrat-Lite party: great accomodation of your political adversaries, less evangelical! That is of course a prescription for a great GOP schism - which is exactly what the Democrats desperately desire. And soon. Preferably before the '10 elections so the GOP will not present a united front in the mid-terms. Wishful thinking. Even if the GOP were to fracture, it would have little effect on the '10 elections. Local candidates not relying on the largess of the NRCC or the RNC would still run on the GOP ticket and have much greater success running on the change ticket given the fact that we'll be looking at double digit unemployment, record deficits and Democrat corruption scandals - those related directly to the Stimulus and just the normal ones, hi Jackie Murtha, Billy Jefferson and Chris Dodd - for as far as the eye can see. The Demorats built the Change ticket and now have to face an impatient electorate.
The Democrats will of course have the media potraying the crisis as over and hyping any Republican as vicious and out of touch. Y'know, the kind of people who would call someone a traitor and then hope for his death amid wild applause.
